Learn How to Pack

If you're in charge of packing your household goods before moving, you should learn how to pack properly. Indeed, following a certain packing guide ensures that your valuables are well protected when placed in moving boxes, thus allowing them to withstand the journey ahead, whether local or international. Your NYC moving company can provide you with helpful packing tips which are designed to facilitate the packing process and ensure the safety of your goods.

Clearly, before starting the packing job, you need to have ample boxes and supplies available. Your boxes should not only be sturdy and strong, but should come in a variety of shapes and sizes, to suitably hold your vast array of household items. Supplies should include, for instance, packing tape, bubble wrap and packing paper. Ask your NYC movers to recommend other useful packing materials.

Which packing techniques should you use?

Primarily, it is highly advisable to pack one room at a time. On each of the boxes you pack, clearly indicate its contents and the room in the house it belongs to. This system will make the unpacking process a lot simpler. Don’t put too many items in one box. Try to remember to pack particularly heavy articles in small boxes, in order to make them easier to carry. Fragile items should be double-boxed, and their respective boxes should be thoroughly cushioned. Make sure that boxes containing particularly delicate valuables are placed on top of the boxes holding heavy articles – rather than the other way around.

Here some packing tips for specific household items:

Small appliances - Should be placed in their original container or in a box padded with packing paper.

Large and major appliances - It is highly recommended that you ask the appliance dealer whether there are any particular moving instructions you should be aware of. Any loose fittings and accessories attached to the large appliance (hoses or cables, for instance), should be removed from the device and packed separately. Doors and other moveable parts should be properly taped to the appliance.

Beds – The bed frame should be removed and the mattress protected with a mattress cover.

Books – Should be placed in medium-sized moving boxes. When packing books, do not place other items in the same box. Any empty spaces can be filled with packing paper or bubble wrap.

Clothes – Garments that usually hang in closets and should therefore be kept wrinkle-free, should be packed in wardrobe moving boxes, which in fact function as "temporary" closets. Large moving boxes can contain a large amount of clothes without the risk of becoming too heavy. Folded garments can, in fact, remain in their dresser drawers for the duration of the move.

Blankets and Pillows - Large and light items such as blankets and pillows can be packed in extra large moving boxes. You can place small fragile items in between the packed bedclothes.

Dishes – Wrap each piece separately, and place them in kitchen moving boxes. Pots and pans can be placed in a box with packing paper in between them.

Glass – Use packing paper or bubble wrap, and wrap each glass separately.

Mirrors and Paintings – Use paper to wrap small mirrors and pack them in boxes. Large mirrors and pictures are best protected in frame moving boxes.

Radios and TVs – Should always be boxed and loaded in an upright position, preferably with furniture pads.

Rugs and Carpets – Should be rolled and taped.

Valuables – Jewelry, important documents and safe deposit box contents should be placed in a small box or case and remain with you at all times.
